Water Pressure Tanks

A pressure tank is an integral part of most water systems. The purpose of the tank is to control the operation of the pump. The tank contains pressurized air which is pressurized further when the pump turns on. When the pressure reaches the shut off pressure, the pump turns off. The pressurized air then pushes the water out.

There are two main types of pressure tanks:

Hydromatic and Captive Air

Hydromatic Tank

  • Does not have a membrane to separate air and water.
  • Over time, the air is absorbed by the water. For this reason, the air needs to be recharged once per year

Captive Air Tank

  • A captive air tank uses a rubber diaphragm to separate the water from the tank. These are more popular as they do not require service.
  • Water pressure tanks usually last about 10 years. If you have water pressure issues, call us to come out and take a look!
